One Point of View on Ed-SPOST

The past Educational SPLOSTS in Cherokee County have been established to build new schools and facilities to accommodate tremendous population growth. At Cherokee Parents for Choice, we feel strongly that the previous SPLOSTS could have incorporated many parent's previous requests to ensure some of the SPLOST money went to building facilities that would be implemented as magnet and charter schools at the K-8 and 9-12 level. Why not pose the question directly to the CCSD?  Will this new SPOLST be used to fund these programs?
We are afraid that it will not.  This new Ed-SPLOST will be used to pay down debt  that occured due to overspending (with some of the money slated to build a new Administration building)  It seems CCSD has backed themselves into a corner.  How can they expect the voters to give more money to an entity that has shown it clearly cannot manage our money.  Why would we want to continue to accrue more debt?  It is our position, and we are not alone, that the upcoming ED-SPLOST needs to be rewritten to nullify the old SPLOST, ensure all debts are repaid, and then have a new contract of line items, the first being to implement charter schools that will serve all children in Cherokee County via a lottery system...not just schools that give a leg up to only the gifted children.  We think parents should consider the anti--choice positions of the majority (4) of the School Board Members and ask themselves if more of the same is really what they want?
