Group Claiming to be "For Kids" Slams Charter School Parents

In a disguised e-mail to a random group of public charter school parents, a group tied to the Cherokee County School District has shown their true colors with unfounded accusations and divisive language intended to anger parents who have fought for choice in Cherokee County.

The group, Renewing the SPLOST for Cherokee’s Children, sent the e-mail on Saturday October 22nd from an anonymous g-mail account and was unwilling to come forward and have their names be known after repeated attempts by disturbed parents to do so. They did, however, inaccurately accuse the parents at Cherokee Charter Academy of being against the Ed-SPLOST tax renewal to "get even" with the School Board for denying the public charter.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Why would there be "sour grapes" when the county's first Charter school is open and flourishing?

Furthermore, this "renewing" group will NOT find one single example of an official representing any public charter school who has stated an opinion on Ed-SPLOST or any other CCSD initiative. To suggest that one person's view on the matter is a position of all CCA parents is not only irresponsible, it is tantamount to libel.

The Cherokee Parents for Choice would very much like to offer an open, public panel discussion on Ed-SPLOST prior to the November 8th election with the people who sent this scandalous and hidden spam e-mail.  Come forward from the shadows and let's engage in an open and honest debate on the issue. Until then, we hope they will stop spamming parents based solely on their school choice.

In other news, the Cherokee Parents for Choice would very much have liked to have all parents weigh in on the CCSD "Increased School Choice" Survey, which was offered only to current school district families, but we will wait patiently and are very excited that the community at large (489 families) is so supportive of improving our education system through the development of STEM and other Cherokee Academies.

Cherokee Parents for Choice is in no way affiliated with any one school and the views and opinions on this page are those of the concerned parents who are members of this group.

  1. I am pro-choice for educational options in Cherokee, but am concerned by this post. I read this in the AJC earlier in the school year and was very concerned by this statement. I do believe this is where the 'get even' or 'sour grapes' is coming from. It was very clear in the paper.

"The November vote could be payback for the June vote, said Kelly Marlow, a member of the activist group Cherokee Parents for Choice. Her group, and others, fought three years for a charter school in the county and were rebuked three times by the school board and Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo. “They wouldn’t give us the charter school, so I’m not giving them their SPLOST,” Marlow said."

    Very concerning in my opinion.
