In the past, the Educational SPLOSTS in Cherokee County have been to build new schools and facilities, due to the tremendous population growth. Dr. P. and the CCSD have consistently shown that they are only interested in administering a non-progressive education in Cherokee County. It is clear that the previous SPLOST could have incorporated the requests from parents and advocates to ensure that some of the SPLOST money went to building facilities that would be implemented as magnet schools and programs at the K-8 and 9-12 level. In the end, the upcoming Ed-SPLOST is more of the same, just more funding to build more schools that are going to be run the same way as the existing schools (a traditional public school model). As supporters of school choice and innovation, we cannot support this policy.
Once more, the last SPLOST contract is still not complete and there are debt issues that occurred due to overspending, leaving the CCSD in a quandary. Perhaps it should be suggested that the upcoming ED SPLOST be rewritten to nullify the old SPLOST, ensure all debts are repaid, and then have a new contract of line items, the first being to implement two magnet programs at the K-8 and 9-12 level once enough SPLOST money is collected to fund those programs and any facilities that need built.
